Driving Tips

The highway between Cancun and Tulum is in excellent condition, but it is still wise to be cautious of driving conditions you may not be used to at home.

If you wish to turn left when traveling on a two-lane road it is customary to slow down, signal left and pull off to the right side of the road. When the road has cleared in both directions you can turn left. Always give preference to cars following you to pass.

If the car in front of you turns on their left blinker they may be signaling you that it is safe to pass.

Most secondary roads are narrow and have no shoulder. Be alert for pedestrians or animals crossing or standing in the road.

Watch for speed bumps (see yellow sign below) at the entrance and exit of just about every town and village.

If you happen to encounter a military checkpoint on the highway, be courteous and you will soon be on your way. They are looking for drugs and weapons.

Common road signs you may see while driving are listed below.
